About JEA:
JEA is a pension software company providing complex pension administration solutions to public sector clients. With over 40 years in business, JEA provides these solutions to some of the largest pension funds in North America. Our company is comprised of business and technology leaders who work together to provide our client with solutions that focus on their unique requirements and administrative processes. Our products include our PENFAX suite of products - our Member Portal, our Employer Portal, and our PENFAX Admin System.
Position Summary:
JEA is seeking a Senior UX Designer for an eight-month contract position (with potential for an extension), to embark on a product design initiative with the goal of focusing on the usability of JEA’s products while also driving further productivity gains for JEA clients who manage and operate sophisticated pension plan administration centers across North America. In this role, you will apply your knowledge and experience gained from developing UX designs for extremely large-scale enterprise applications - JEA’s products and solutions are far more extensive than simple websites or web apps.
You will also be responsible leading the plan for a UX design project (excluding the actual development of the new screens), in addition to being responsible for the creation of design proposals. This will include defining the activities, phases, milestones, and timelines of the design aspects of the project, focused on phases specific to UX Design (wireframing, usability testing, etc).
The successful candidate will report to JEA’s V.P. Product Management, working closely with JEA’s team of Business Analysts who have expertise with our clients’ functional requirements. In this role you will also collaborate with JEA’s Engineering Team, who will ultimately be developing the screens in accordance with the new design.
This is a remote position and the successful candidate may be located anywhere within Canada. We encourage qualified applicants from all over Canada to apply.
Key Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the end-to-end UX design process.
- Apply your knowledge and experience gained developing UX designs for extremely large-scale enterprise applications.
- Apply your expertise in accessibility certification requirements (WCAG 2.1 AA, Section 508) to ensure that JEA’s UX and UI designs will be able to meet the stringent requirements that are required to meet both regulatory and policy requirements, while minimizing any compromise with respect to user engagement, aesthetics, or usability.
- Develop a UX design plan, including milestones (e.g. user persona definition, wireframing, usability testing, etc), timing, and definition of when internal and external stakeholders will need to be involved. For clarity, this plan is focused on design and excludes the actual development of the new screens in JEA’s software products.
- Identify an overall design language for JEA’s products.
- Apply highly innovative design approaches to bring value (in terms of usability, user-engagement, and productivity) in the development of a new front-end UX design for JEA’s products which must support use from any device using any popular browser.
- Define the value of our new UX design, in terms of the unique and innovative aspects of your proposed design that will help JEA’s products offer improved usability, user-engagement, and productivity.
- Collaborate with other senior JEA stakeholders on communicating the value of the updated design to our clients.
- Define design standards for our Engineering Team to adhere to, while also ensuring that these standards are being followed through development.
- Work closely with our team of Business Analysts, to ensure that the functional requirements of each screen is correctly captured in our updated design.
- Collaborate with our Engineering, Product, and Business Analysis Teams throughout development, should questions or clarifications be needed and to assess the technical feasibility of design proposals, in the interest of identifying pragmatic solutions to hurdles.
- Promote UX design principles within JEA, building awareness of our design approach while also promoting awareness of the corresponding value.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Over 10 years of experience as a UX designer, product designer, or similar role.
- Experience leading at least one (and preferably at least three) successful UX design project for a very large-scale enterprise application, with preference given for experience with applications in the benefits administration sector or applications that are designed to support an enterprise’s administrative operations.
- Be able to present a portfolio of past design projects that highlight the value of your successful UX design approaches, including for projects requiring support for use on any device (desktop, mobile, or any device with a popular web browser).
- Expertise and experience in designing UX designs that must be certified to meet accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA, Section 508, or equivalent), with a preference for having experience in supporting and analyzing and reporting on the results of accessibility audits conducted by third parties.
- Must possess strong communication skills, with the ability to correspond directly with JEA clients, JEA Engineering, Business Analysis, and Product teams, and with the JEA Executive Team.
- Asset: While we would prefer if a successful candidate is capable of both UX and visual (graphical) design, we recognize that these skillsets are often specific and unique, and that the graphical design aspect may need to be covered by a second individual.
- Asset: A university or college education in HCI (Human Computer Interaction) and/or digital design.
JEA is an equal opportunity employer and actively supports equality and diversity in the workplace.
