Under the helm of Publishers Clearing House (PCH), our house of brands connects engaged audiences with educational and entertaining content deeply rooted in their passions and curiosities.
The Role:
Wide Open Media is seeking a highly motivated and detailed-oriented Editorial Director to chart the course as we usher in a new era at FanBuzz. The ideal leader will bring a passion for sports with a modern approach, engaging new audiences, embracing cultural trends, and championing inclusivity in the sports industry. The Editorial Director will play a critical role in expanding the brand’s inspiration and service content for sports enthusiasts.
Responsibilities:
- Own the vision for the brand and its growth through content across platforms, prioritizing content based on short-term and long-term goals
- Manage the editorial team and oversee daily production and publication of content across full time writers and editors and freelance contributors
- Cultivate a diverse network of freelance writers with skills, subject matter expertise, and excellent sourcing
- Direct the brand's editorial calendar, from daily article flow to annual tentpoles and everything in-between: feature packages, always-on franchises, same-day news hits and second-day follows, how-tos, deep dives, photo galleries, listicles, product reviews, and more
- Provide oversight and lead the direction of big-picture special projects, including the planning and management of editorial, social, and video content
- Ideate unique and thought-provoking content for the FanBuzz audience to generate engagement and increase traffic
- Establish, enforce, and evolve FanBuzz’s personality as expressed through selection, voice, and tone in content across platforms
- Analyze social, industry, and competitor trends, leveraging insights to continuously refine editorial strategy
- Provide oversight of the brand's social and video strategy to ensure it adheres to brand mission and creative standards, serves user interests, and fulfills business objectives
- Partner with the sales team on program ideation and execution of editorial content tied to sold programs
- Know the sports industry and its constituent parts inside and out, from activities to destinations, food to wellness
- Lead ideation and creative development of the brand's approach to new and emerging content platforms
Requirements
Qualifications:
- 8+ years in digital lifestyle journalism
- Deep knowledge of digital content distribution platforms and practices, including SEO, social media, email newsletters, and syndicated environments
- 3+ years experience as an assigning editor in an editorial leadership role at a major publication
- 3+ years managing, hiring, and developing writers and/or editors
- Proven experience with editorial brand development and traffic growth, while maintaining industry-leading editorial quality
- Expert knowledge and understanding of news writing and SEO best practices
- Extensive experience with digital content management systems and processes, including photo services, workflow management systems, SEO tools such as Ahrefs and Semrush, and performance reporting tools such as Google Analytics and Parse.ly
- Experience working with cross-functional teams including social media managers, analysts, and audience development professionals
- Strong familiarity/experience working with sports subject matter
You Are:
- Extensive knowledge of sports of all kinds—football, basketball, and baseball in particular—at both the collegiate and professional levels, for both men and women
- Relentlessly curious about athletes and what motivates them, how they chase greatness, and how they cope with failure
- Full of opinions, most of them hard-earned, all of them readily shared
- Happiest when nerding out over the details over the details of stats, records, and game-defining moments—even if they occurred thirty years ago

- An evangelist for the joys and communal benefits of sports, especially throughout the U.S.
