Job Description:

Location: We support US flexible working arrangements in the contiguous 48 states. This role is hybrid - offices are located in Portland, ME, Wellesley, MA, Kansas City, MO and Hartford, CT.

The opportunity:

Working within the U.S. tax department of a large Canadian-based financial services company, the Associate Director, U.S. Tax Operations performs advanced or specialized work, which requires a comprehensive knowledge of accounting theory and principles as well as solid U.S. income tax knowledge. The successful candidate will have a background in the insurance industry including P&C companies and NAIC reporting. In addition, the ability to complete tax reporting and compliance under tight timetables will be expected.

How you will contribute:

  • Review monthly, quarterly and annual U.S. income tax provisions for purposes of IFRS and NAIC financial statements for insurance and non-insurance companies.
  • Research U.S. tax theory, apply rules to as applicable.
  • Review federal and state corporate income tax returns for insurance and non-insurance companies including remittances.
  • Assist with complex state unitary returns.
  • Maintain compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley internal control requirements.
  • Interact with personnel from all areas of the Company in order to obtain and understand complex financial data, including working with NAIC team on annual statements.
  • Prepare/review responses to inquiries from federal and state tax auditors.
  • Provide support with the internal audit process and to financial auditors.
  • Assist with forecasting and projections both for scenario testing and quarterly deliverables.
  • Review tax accounts reconciliations.
  • Approve intercompany and external tax payments and other intercompany reporting.
  • Review tax provisions in Longview software, including consolidation of US data.
  • Assist in special projects as needed.
  • Manage professional staff (if applicable).

What you will bring with you:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or the equivalent is required.
  • Advanced degree in taxation and/or a CPA is required.
  • 7-10 years’ experience in corporate tax accounting (ASC740 and IAS12) and U.S. insurance rules under SSAP No. 101.
  • Deep understanding of federal and state compliance, including insurance, consolidated federal and unitary state groups.
  • Extensive experience in tax technology tools (e.g. Checkpoint, OneSource, Longview, etc.) and financial applications (e.g., PAM, SAP, etc.).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are critical.
  • Strong communication skills both written and oral are required.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a detail-oriented mindset is necessary to be successful.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications (e.g. Excel and Word) is essential.
