Position
Summary
The
Director, Business Development play a key role in leading licensing activities
for new products as well as life cycle management of current branded products
and serve as a key resource for review of portfolios of products for
acquisition opportunities. This important role will focus on establishing
market awareness and identifying opportunities to license or acquire late-stage
clinical compounds, conducting the technical review and working with the deal
team through completion. This role will require a strong technical background,
solid analytical capabilities, expertise in relevant therapeutic areas, and the
ability to effectively interface with business development team members,
R&D leadership, finance and commercial development. Success in the role will
require effective collaboration with key internal leaders, external consultants
and collaboration partners to build and manage a robust pipeline of deals.
The
Director, Business Development is an important member of the Business
Development (BD) team and will contribute significantly to Paladin’s continued
growth and success as a specialty pharmaceutical company. The ideal candidate
will contribute to the efforts of the entire BD team and will from time-to-time
and as needed, be a deal team member on other initiatives. This role is a
highly compelling opportunity for an experienced licensing executive with
strong technical skills, excellent business acumen and a nuanced understanding
of the deal-making process.

Specific
Responsibilities
- Play a key role in the
licensing activities for a designated therapeutic area / geography or
product strategy (such as Life Cycle Management) for Paladin Labs to grow
its current and new therapeutic area portfolio.
- Achieve a solid
understanding of overall company strategy and existing strategies within
specific therapeutic areas (pain, neuropathic pain, neurology, supportive
oncology, perioperative); make suggestions and enhancements as
appropriate.
- Develop and refine areas of
interest and targeting criteria to identify complementary clinical
products and product portfolios in the context of Company/therapeutic
strategies.
- Develop a comprehensive
business development plan for clinical products/product portfolios that
identifies and prioritizes the most attractive opportunities in
collaboration with the Business Development Team, R&D and Commercial
Operations.
- Identify and assess
potential acquisitions, licensing opportunities, and collaborations. Work
with strategic marketing to conduct on-going market assessment to identify
attractive early-stage clinical opportunities.
- Organize cross-functional
teams to conduct further diligence after conducting initial due diligence
and validating opportunities from a technical and IP perspective.
- Participate in development
of the approach, opportunity assessment, and valuation (primarily
technical probability of success, competitive advantages of potential
product opportunities) process. Marshal resources as necessary to ensure adequate
support and responsiveness for each deal.
- As a key Business
Development licensing professional for the company, develop/refine
business development processes, tools and resources. Build analytical
models and work with finance to perform financial analyses,
comprehensively value opportunities. Provide clear explanations and make
well-founded recommendations to the Management Team.
- Establish collaborative,
effective, and trusting relationships with key internal functions
(R&D, legal, regulatory, finance, marketing etc.), to ensure the free
flow of information and ideas. Balance the need to collaborate with the
need to challenge and test.
- Foster internal
communication and responsiveness. Develop processes and procedures to
understand and meet collaboration partners’ needs and expectations. Ensure
that Paladin is well-represented in competitive deal situations.
- Employ effective project
management methodologies. Ensure disciplined decision-making around deals
which do not clear “Go/No-Go” criteria.
- Maintain a strong network of
clinical, academic and industry contacts; continually seek competitive
intelligence. Actively participate in relevant clinical and industry
meetings and conferences. Through established and developing technical
networks, continually seek new opportunities.
- Effectively engage and
manage external consulting resources to shape strategy, remain aware of
the evolving market, and assist with selected deals.
- Ensure that the review of
product portfolios for M&A and the late-stage clinical Business
Development pipeline is coordinated with existing Business Development
Strategy, R&D efforts and overall Company strategy.
- Achieve immediate internal
credibility with key functions and be viewed as a world-class team player.
Act in a very hands-on manner to ensure effective process management,
utilization of outside resources and sound decision making.
Candidate
Profile
Education
& Experience
- Experienced business
development/ licensing professional with a minimum of 5 years of
experience in a variety of research and development, and technical
assessment. Has drug development and deal evaluation experience.
- Technical background and
experience in drug development or operations preferred. MBA or MD, PhD or
Pharm D required.
- Most likely has the
following experience profile (in descending order of relevance):
- Currently in a business
development role in a leading big Pharma, specialty pharmaceutical or
Biotech company, responsible for licensing clinical opportunities or
M&A product portfolios.
- Currently in an investment
bank, venture capital or hedge fund or leading consulting firm with
specific responsibility for assessing early-stage clinical investment
opportunities or advising companies on making early stage clinical
investments/valuing early stage opportunities and portfolios.
- Currently in a big Pharma
R&D organization with responsibility for screening early-stage
clinical deals, or in a development stage company which has built a
portfolio of substantial compounds through acquisition.
- Has deal experience or
exposure. Has played a key role in the technical evaluation of products
and companies, leading and supporting numerous acquisitions, in-licensing,
out-licensing and collaborations. Possesses experience identifying
opportunities and working with deal team responsible for negotiating and
completing transactions. Has a successful track record identifying
successful products and licensing opportunities.
Knowledge
- Has an understanding of
product development and commercialization. Has experience working
collaboratively, cross-functionally and globally with Research &
Development, Medical Affairs, Commercial Development, Marketing and
Strategic Business Units to identify products and portfolios of products
as part of a portfolio strategy that drives competitive initiatives.
- Has a broad network of
clinical / scientific / industry contacts
